Port Blair, Oct 07: Mr R Mohan, State President, Bhartiya Janta Party highlighted the burning issues of Andaman & Nicobar Islands in front of the central leadership of Bhartiya Janta Party during the National executive meeting held at Faridabad recently. Totally ten various issues were told to the central leadership.
Addressing a press conference, Mr Mohan said that the first demand the party has kept is to constitute a state assembly in A & N Islands. “A lot of development can happen and for Islands’ safety a state assembly is necessary,” Anil Tiwari, Spokesperson of BJP said during a press conference yesterday.
The party demanded that Chairman of Municipal Council and Zilla Parishad should have a fixed tenure of 5years and there should be a direct election for the said post. There should be a Panchayati Raj System in Nicobar District apart from Campbell Bay.
The party kept the issue of submerged land, and Mr Mohan said that Party’s stand is the same in the issue.
The party also demanded construction of bridges connecting Chatham to Bambooflat, Middle Strait to Neelambur and Gandhighat to Uttara as it will improve the connectivity between various islands.
“A new Harbour should be constructed near Sippighat so that it can ease the traffic congestion. The party demanded the Ministry to pursue early sanction for construction of transshipment port at Campbell Bay, this will help to gain foreign currency as per day there is a movement of more than 200 cargo ships. The party demanded that Veer Savarkar Airport is a declared international airport and thus it should start handling international traffic this will boost the economy of our islands,” Mr. Tiwari added.
