Port Blair, Aug 02: Today as many as 98 people have been tested positive in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, among them many are either directly or indirectly involved in the fight against Corona Virus in Andaman. With this, total cases of COVID19 in Andaman stands at 734 out of which 484 are active and 242 people have recovered. Eight people have died because of COVID19 till now.
As Coronavirus is continuing to hit frontline warriors in Andaman, things are getting a little out of control in Andaman but good news is that many Corona Warriors are getting ready to get back to work once they will be tested negative in coming days.
The Director of Health Service, Dr. Omkar Singh tested positive today, Dr. Avijit Ray the Nodal Officer of COVID19 was last week tested positive. It is expected that Dr. Avijit Ray and few other active Corona Warriors will be discharged in next few days after which the Administration will be in a much better position to fight the COVID19 virus.
When contacted an officer of Health Department told Andaman Sheekha that supplies and resources are also getting exhausted fast and the Health Department has ordered for more resources. “The major problem is that teams formed to fight corona are getting infected and the Department is facing problem in building new teams, however, within one week some people of the team will be back in action,” the officer added, on the condition of anonymity.
When asked whether Health Department will take help of volunteers from civil society to fight the virus, the officer of Health Department said that presently some volunteers are working but most of the volunteers from outside work in offices and for COVID19 work Health Department requires more of field workers for spraying disinfectants, disposing PPE kits etc.
He said that presently 60 beds have been placed at newly opened COVID care centre of ITI and 55 beds are already full, 30 more beds are ready. He added that more 250 beds will also be placed in the workshop area for COVID19 cases.
Regarding Rapid Test Kits, he said that within few days 20,000 more Rapid Test Kits will reach Andaman.
Regarding complaints that COVID19 cases kept in Home Isolation are not given medicines or proper care and also regarding the complaints that family members of COVID19 cases kept in Home Isolation, who are developing fever are also not tested, he said that the matter will be reviewed soon.
