Baratang, April 01: While water crisis in the South Andaman region is making residents suffer a lot, the same crisis has now hit the Baratang region as well.
As per the residents of Baratang, the amount of water supplied to them is not enough for daily activities, “sometimes the quantity supplied is so little that even drinking water doesn’t get collected,” said a resident of Baratang on condition of anonymity.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Mr. Ganapathy, a resident of Baratang said that though the Andaman Public Works Department supplies water roughly 02 days a week for 20 minutes, the pressure is too low.
“We are forced to leg it to the nearby well, nowadays, to equalize the shortage of water supplied from the end of APWD and it is becoming increasingly difficult for us,” Mr. Ganapathy added.
Andaman Sheekha has also learned that in some villages at Baratang, the supply of water has been totally stopped by the APWD and the need is fulfilled with the help of water tankers.
Residents are now demanding the administration to take some calls in this regard soon, as water even in the most visited well at Oralkatcha is soon going to go dry due to the summer season and there is no other way out to tackle the water shortage here.
