Port Blair, Jan 19: First Dr. B Srikant Memorial Half- Marathon organised by Nicobar Police during the Police Raising Week was huge success. The level of response received from public was unprecedented and more than 1000 persons registered for the marathon and more than 900 actually participated. This half marathon was organised with the dual aims- First to promote women empowerment under “BetiBachao, BetiPadao” and second to highlight the sacrifices made by our brave uniformed personnel in the service of our Nation. The main tag line of the marathon was “Run for the Brave”.
The Half Marathon was organised with active support and coordination of District Administration and IAF Base, Car Nicobar. Moreover INS Baaz, INS Kardip and Indian Coast Guard have also supported this event. Three categories of races were conducted under the Half-Marathon:
- 21 KM
- 10 KM Cross Country
- 05 KM Fun Run
Around 450 Armed forces officers and personnel and more than 450 local populace participated in the event including large number of students and women participants. Even one specially disabled student Akash also participated in 5Km Run and was awarded special prize.The Chief Guest of the event was the Inspector General of Police, A&N Islands Shri Sanjay Kumar, IPS accompanied by Guest of Honour DIGP, A&N Islands Shri Vijay Singh, IPS.
It is worth mentioning that many senior officers of A & N Police have also successfully completed the 21.1 KM half marathon including DIGP Shri Vijay Singh, IPS, SP Nicobar Shri Rajeev Kumar, IPS, DySP Car Nicobar ShriPrashantChoudhary and DySP Campbell Bay ShriJagdev Singh Yadav. The half marathon was organised in a very professional manner by deploying the RFID based electronic time reading system. At the Closing ceremony, a welcome speech was given by Shri. Rajeev Kumar, IPS Superintendent of Police, Nicobar District followed by prize distribution ceremony and concluding speech by IGP Shri Sanjay Kumar, IPS.
