Mayabunder, Jan 09: Water supply to the residents of Pahalgaon Panchayat in Middle Andaman is restricted only twice a week now and reason behind this water crisis is largely because even after completion of ‘Kanchinallah Water Project’ at Pahalgaon by the Andaman Public Works Department, the water project has failed to provide water to public, since its construction in year 2013-2014.
As per reports, the project that involved a budget of several lakhs has never been used after construction, in which, the department constructed a 05 meter deep ring well and pump house, the department also laid a 3 km pipeline and a pump was also purchased for this project.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, the Pradhan, Pahalgaon Gram Panchayat, Mr Shibananda Bairagi said that for this project the contractor was paid but till date not a single drop of water was supplied from the ‘Kanchinallah Water Project’ to the pubic of Pahargaon.
“The Engine in the pump house is now missing and the well is in a dilapidated condition,” said the Pradhan.
Mr Bairagi further alleged that it’s a criminal wastage of taxpayers’ money.
The pradhan added that Pahalgaon area has the water sources through which entire Mayabunder can be supplied with water but the sources were not properly managed.
“A lot of water treatment plants have been constructed in the Mayabunder region and God knows from where the water will come in those treatment plants,” he added.
“In the month of January the water is supplied to the residents of the area twice a week, what will happen in the month of May- June?” questioned Mr Bairagi.
Hopefully, the administration will fix accountability on the concerned department for this waste of taxpayers’ money and plan something concrete to solve the water crisis in Pahalgaon region, which is currently not tolerable to the residents of the area.
