Port Blair, Dec 24: Atal Bihari Memorial Cricket Tournament that is currently going on in the Netaji Statdium, Port Blair ‘holds all the aces’ and will always be remembered in the history, as this tournament has given birth to the Women Cricket in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The tournament organized by Regional Sports Council, Port Blair in association with Cricket Association Andaman and Nicobar since 11th December, 2019, have 02 Women Cricket team and 27 Men’s Team participating.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Dr TK Jijith Rekh, State President, Athletic Federation of India, said that never in the history of Andaman any Women Team has taken part in the Cricket Tournament. He said that it’s the beginning and hoped that this start will give a big boost to other young female athlete to participate in Cricket Tournaments.
“We are pulling out all the stops and trying to give opportunity to all the youths of the Island to play the sport and focus a career in Cricket, association has also kept the entry fees too low, so that more number of teams participate,” said Dr Jijth Rekh.
Not only this, to give a professional look and increase the standard of Cricket in the Islands, the Regional Sports Council and Cricket Association Andaman and Nicobar had called Cricket Umpires of state level from Kolkata for the Atal Bihari Memorial tournament.
Till date 30 matches has already been played in the Cricket Tournament and there are many more to go.
