Port Blair, Dec 12: Anthropological Survey of India, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre, Port Blair organized an “Awareness Programme on Disaster Preparedness” in collaboration with Directorate of Disaster Management, Andaman & Nicobar Administration on 12th December, 2019 at 11:00 AM in the Seminar Hall.
Mr. Govind Ram, DANICS, Director, Disaster Management A&N Administration was the chief guest at the occasion. Mr. Deen Mohammad, Safety Officer and Mr. Gyan Singh, Assistant Director, Logistics were also the speakers at the occasion.
Dr. Nilanjan Khatua, Superintending Anthropologist and head of office, AnSI, ANRC officially welcomed and introduced the guest speakers and gave a brief outline of the programme.
Mr. Govind Ram gave a informative speech on the awareness and sensitization on the issue of Disaster Management and measures taken by Directorate of Disaster Management at different levels of administrative set up. He described the types of Disaster in general and those disasters may face by Andaman and Nicobar islands in particular. Talking through the challenges posed by tsunami of 2004, he outlined the importance of Disaster management committee for any institution and Anthropological Survey of India in particular. He proposed each institution should have a nodal officer, having responsibility to handle any kind of disaster and mitigate the upcoming disasters in future.
Mr. Gyan Singh, Assistant Director gave a brief record on the establishment of Disaster Management administrative setup from national to district level. He also discussed important points on preparedness and made us aware of various types of disasters which can cause harm for living creatures and nonliving properties. Mr. Deen Mohammad, Safety Officer gave brief information on “Do & Don’t” list in the time of disaster. He also stressed to remember the toll free no 1077, 1070 for enquiry related to any kind of disasters.
In the interactive session, Mr. S. A. Awaradi, Director ANTRI, pointed out the issues of inter-island communication and stressed on the need for island wise disaster plan. Mr. S.A. Awaradi, Ex-Director ANTRI, Mr. Sanjeev Hira, IGNOU and staff members of the AnSI, ANRC, Port Blair were present on the occasion. Dr. Koel Mukherjee, Anthropologist, AnSI, ANRC thanked the guests for such a valuable and informative talk.
