Port Blair, Sept 20: The Secretary (AH&VS), Smt. Anjali Sehrawat visited the Veterinary Hospital, Junglighat and Livestock Farm Complex of Department of AH&VS at Dollygunj to explore possible ways to address the lack of nutritious fodder for cattle in these Islands. Dairy Farming is a lucrative venture which is one of the most sought after livestock activity in these Islands. The major constraint in expansion of Dairy sector is the non-availability of nutritious fodder as a result of limited land resources.
To overcome this constraint, the Department is in the process of developing a road map to improve the availability of fodder through scientific management and introducing modern innovations. The Department of AH&VS has installed a hydroponic fodder production unit at cattle farm, Dollygunj. The Secretary also inspected the Cattle farm, Azolla propagation unit, goat & pig breeding unit and gave directions for improvement in production so that the livestock farmers can avail the benefits. She directed the officers of the Department to develop a comprehensive strategy for improving fodder production in these Islands.
