Mayabunder, May 20: Today at about 10 AM, the residents of Karmatang No 9 & 10 of Mayabunder region organized an agitation at Karmatang No 10 village, against the APWD for not repairing the District Highway since a long time, which is causing regular accidents. The agitation began at 05.00 AM and fuming people blocked two water tankers.
The Karen residents of that area, under the leadership of Saw Teemu, a prominent villager, expressed their anguish over the fact that heavy water tankers, which are continuously making trip from Karmatang 10, water source to Mayabunder, are causing huge damages to the roads.
Public alleged that the roads have not been repaired since past many years and the regular plying of these heavy water tankers, the road is getting more and more damaged.
Villagers pointed out that in the first week of this month a major accident took place in Karmatang in which Mr. Saw December lost his life after his moped collided with a water tanker.
The villagers further added that the area has always been neglected by the local administration. The anguished Karen villagers told Andaman Sheekha that inspite of given written complaints to the Administration about their grievances, nothing has been done from the side of Administration.
Later after assurances of EE, NACD Mayabunder the Karen villagers withdrew their agitation. The APWD reportedly assured to repair the road from Thursday. The agitation ended at around 07.40 AM.
