Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 28: Former Pramukh of Mayabunder Panchayat Samiti, Mr. Abdul Siddique, has urged the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to take immediate steps to regulate firecracker prices ahead of Diwali, stating that exorbitant prices are placing a financial burden on the general public, particularly economically weaker and middle-income families.
In a letter, addressed to the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Siddique highlighted the alleged excessive pricing of firecrackers in the islands. He stated that Diwali is a festival of happiness and celebration, but the steep prices of firecrackers are preventing many parents from purchasing even small items for their children. He expressed concern that such excessive pricing is turning a festive occasion into an economic burden for ordinary households.
Mr. Siddique requested the Lieutenant Governor to direct the concerned departments and authorities to take urgent action to ensure fair pricing and prevent consumers from being exploited. He called for the existing prices of firecrackers to be examined and appropriate price controls to be introduced in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.
He also urged the authorities to ensure that all firecracker retailers charge only the prescribed or reasonable prices and do not demand excessive amounts from customers. Emphasising consumer protection, he called for the mandatory issuance of bills to every customer immediately after a purchase. The bills, he said, should clearly mention the description of the firecrackers purchased, their quantity, individual rates and the total amount paid.
Furthermore, Mr. Siddique requested the administration to convene an urgent meeting with firecracker traders and other concerned stakeholders to determine fair selling prices based on the actual cost of the products and a reasonable profit margin. He said such a measure would help establish transparency in the market and ensure that firecrackers remain affordable for the public during the festive season.
Concluding his appeal, Mr. Siddique expressed hope that the Lieutenant Governor would take prompt cognisance of the issue and issue necessary directions to the concerned officials to ensure fair prices, proper billing and action against those violating applicable rules.
He said effective intervention by the administration would help protect consumers’ interests and enable families across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to celebrate Diwali with their children without facing undue financial hardship.
