Port Blair, May 13: The wooden bridge of Swadesh Nagar, which was once considered as one of the crucial bridges of ATR, today reduced to ashes.
A fire was reported from the abandoned wooden bridge, at around 6:30PM,which is located very close to presently used RCC bridge of ATR at Swadesh Nagar.
As per detail a youth of the area Mr. Manib Pramanick, resident of Duke Nallah, while crossing the RCC bridge this evening, heard some strange sounds from the wooden bridge. When he closely observed the wooden bridge he saw fire on the bridge. Immediately he reported this matter to Fire Services and Fire Tenders reached the spot within four minutes.
Later after nearly 40 minutes the fire was brought under total control by Fire fighters.
The reason behind this fire is yet not known but according to villagers because of quick response of Fire Services and early report by the youth, the new RCC bridge suffered no damages because of Fire and remained fully operational.
It is said that during the tenure of Prof. Jagadish Mukhi, he had directed not to dismantle the wooden bridge as the wooden bridge, according to him, is a symbol of past, which says a lot about how vehicles used to cross ATR in past.
