Port Blair, May 06: For residents of a house, situated at Machi Basti of Ward Number 01 of Haddo, last few weeks were nothing less than living their worst nightmare.
People of the area told Andaman Sheekha today that due to chocked drains, dirty drain waters have now inundated the said house, forcing house owners to take shelter in houses of neighbors and relatives.
The main drain situated close to the house, is the outlet for drain water of the entire area but due to garbage thrown by people, mostly from the community hall, situated nearby, the drain often gets chocked. In past often it was seen that chocked water had entered nearly 11 houses of the area but presently one house is badly affected.
“In my family there are four kids. We can’t even serve food to our kid inside our house. We had to take our kids to others’ house to make them sleep. You can see worms inside the stagnant water, which inundated our house. We have been complaining about it since last one month but no one came to help,” said a lady of the area.
There are a few family members, who sleep in local temple, because of this stagnant water.
After Andaman Sheekha team reached the spot with camera, some efforts were seen from the councillor of the area.
When contacted the councillor of the area Mr. S Karunakaran told Andaman Sheekha that he has already started cleaning the garbage from the drain since yesterday. He said that the delay was because of delay in getting machinery required for this task.
This incident might have caused devastating impact on one family but chocked drains in city due to rampant dumping of garbage, might cause such problem in many other places in city, especially those areas, which are thickly populated.
One wonders that if this is the situation in Machi Basti now, what would happen, when monsoon will arrive? How these eleven families, which had seen ingress of drain water in their houses in past, will deal with the situation?
