Port Blair, Apr 28: The Pradhan of Shaheed Dweep Mr. Ram Krishna Biswas has expressed his deep concern over depleting level of ground water in the Islands, because of ever growing number of people and buildings.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Mr. Biswas said that after rain, the rainwater usually takes no time to flow into the sea, because of which the ground water of the Island do not get properly recharged.
He said that the Panchayat of Shaheed Dweep is now planning to install water harvesting system in every house of Neil Island, which will increase the catchment area and the rainwater will directly go into soil through tanks, connected with water harvesting system in every room.
“Shaheed Dweep is a tiny Island and now we have started to feel the pinch of water crisis due to depleting water level. The CS and Secretary RD have also visited the Island recently. Atleast there should be rain water harvesting tank in all hotels in Shaheed Dweep and the Administration must also assist villagers in installing water harvesting system in their house. Without support of Administration this is not possible,” Mr. Biswas added.
