Port Blair, March 01: A group of villagers, students and parents today staged protest infront of Government Secondary School Namunaghar demanding immediate repairing of school building and also providing a proper playground. Some students also blocked road to press their demands.
Students alleged that the school building is in horrible shape and the school lacks sufficient desks and benches and hence students in many classes have to sit on the floor. They also demanded proper toilet blocks.
Villagers alleged that in past a part of the ceiling in a class room of the school collapsed during school hours, injuring a student.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha the Pradhan of Namunaghar Panchayat, Mrs. Preethima Tirkey said that the land for the school was donated by a former school teacher, Mr. Hari Narayan but in 2010 somehow the land has been transferred in the name of a private businessman, which she said is unfortunate. She demanded that the land should be given back to the Education Department.
As per reports senior officers of Education Department reached the protest site and assured that all necessary steps will be taken to fulfill the demands of students, parents and villagers.
