Port Blair, Feb 04: The Department of Home Science, JNRM, in association with the National Institute of Social Defense, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India organising a Five days State level Workshop on Drug Abuse Prevention for College Students from 4th to 8th February 2019 in Lecture Gallery, JNRM.
The Chief Guest Dr.A.Venkadesh Babu, IRS, Assistant Commissioner (Narcotics), Madurai and Trichi Air Intelligence Wing described how the drugs and its addiction can stop the vibrant growth of countries economic development. There is a need to strengthen the supply reduction strategy through law enforcement agencies, he added. The demand deduction and supply reduction jointly achieved through creating awareness to the students and young minds and each and every one of the student participants of this programme should be the brand ambassador for creating awareness, he spoke.
Mr. P.Sugendran, IAAS, Deputy Director, Director General of Audit (Central), Port Blair, Guest of honour said, due to drugs and alcohol the crime rates has been escalating. The country like India which has rich demographic dividend should tap the potential of youngsters and horn their skills for the betterment of society. The productive age group is asset for our county and being a fast growing economy we too have limitations like drug abuse and addiction and need to be tackled with care, he added.
Dr. J.S.Manhas, Principal, JNRM, informed the gathering about the scenario of drug abuse in Punjab and how it deteriorates the life of youngsters in personal and social. Because of the strenuous efforts of Narcotics control bureau the level of drug abuse has been come down drastically. Mr. K.Venkatesan, HOD, Homescience and Convener of this programme spoke about the righteousness of individual as emphasised by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The students should be the torchbearer to eradicate the evil menace of drugs from Andaman and Nicobar Islands and identify at-least five addicts and work for rehabilitate them, he added. Earlier Smt. Nidhi Shekhawat Assistant Professor of Home Science and Co-Convener of the programme welcomed the gathering and Mr. J.Goutham, Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Zoology and Co-organising Secretary proposed vote of thanks. Ms. Reshma, Student of Ist B.Sc Home Science moderated the programme. Followed by the inaugural session four technical sessions were handled by Dr A Venkadesh Babu, Dr Murali Krishana, Assistant Professor of ANIIMS and Mr. K Venkatesan, HoD of Home Science, JNRM. For the first day the students of B.Sc Home Science and B.A Tamil took part and altogether around 500 students are targeted to cover in this five days programme, says Dr. J.S.Manhas, Principal, JNRM.
