Port Blair, Sept 30: With the suo moto action of Hon’ble High Court of Calcutta, Circuit bench at Port Blair, on the serious issue of keeping the post of Chairperson, UT Commission for Protection of Child Rights in these Islands vacant, the Administration is under tremendous pressure to appoint new Chairperson of UTCPCR soon.
But Islanders wonder whether the Administration will be able to keep politicians away from this statutory body with great powers.
Sources said that the Supreme Court talks for nomination of members but the Chairperson needs to be interviewed by an well learnt committee because selection of the head of an organization, that too, for a crucial body like UTCPCR, should not be compromised.
Qualified people with ample experience in this field of Child Rights are there in these Islands and this is the reason why people with political background must be kept away. Political appointees may not have necessary knowledge of law and this field to take right decisions. Sometimes political leaders are also under pressure to follow directions from the party with vested interest, people fear. Hope the Administration will show great maturity while appointing new Chairperson of UTCPCR, as there are many people who have been fighting for child rights in these Islands and most importantly individuals from UTCPCR’s last tenure, who have proved their mettle, should also not be ignored.
