Port Blair, July 11: The Lt Governor, Lt. Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM today directed the civic administration for strictly implementing the ban on use of plastic carry bags. Chairing a meeting at Raj Niwas here this morning, the Lt Governor emphasised on the need for strict enforcement to keep the Islands neat and clean. Besides giving a shabby look to markets, roads and beaches, these plastic bags lead to severe sanitation problems and block the drainage system, often being the main reason for the overflow of nallahs and water-logging in low lying areas during monsoon. He suggested that departments can even organise ‘shramdan’ on the pattern as done by Defence and Police establishments for cleaning of beaches. “Our beaches should be neat and clean with proper basic amenities”, he said.
He also directed the authorities for concerted action to tackle stray cattle and dogs wandering on the city roads as well as in suburban areas. Directions were given to the Forest department for displaying of uniform boards on the beaches and creeks with adequate information and markings. PBMC was directed to ensure that hoardings on roadside in the city should not be a source of distracting the traffic. Development of parking places across the Islands and beautification of the city must be done on priority.
