Port Blair, June 08: Transportation of Cargo to Campbell Bay Islands is always a challenge for Administration and also for the business community. Adding to the plight shortage of vessels and bad weather often brings additional troubles for remote Islanders.
Shopkeepers are worst hit as they do not get adequate cargo supply, which causes loss in business and also they face the anger of public.
Since yesterday almost all shopkeepers of Campbell Bay staged protest against administration by keeping their shops closed for not allowing adequate cargo in vessel MV Campbell Bay. As per information for some reasons PMB had booked nearly 74 tons of Cargo for Campbell Bay in MV Campbell Bay Vessel but while loading the cargo, the Shipping Services said that only 20 to 25 cargo will be allowed in the vessel due to bad weather.
This triggered protest at Campbell Bay and all shopkeepers kept their shops closed yesterday, which continued today also. Meanwhile, officials of DSS reached Campbell Bay and dealt with the issue professionally but there is no result yet.
Meanwhile, MV Chuglam reached Campbell Bay today with cargo morning and MV Campbell Bay reached this evening with passengers and cargo. As per sources the offloading works of cargo will begin tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile Shopkeepers of Campbell organized a meeting and decided to continue the protest till their demands are fulfilled.
However, the residents and business community of Campbell Bay are demanding to allow transportation of atleast 50 tons cargo in MV Campbell Bay ship, on regular basis as other cargo vessels like MV Chuglam takes nearly 15 days to reach Campbell Bay and by that time many cargo get perish or damaged.
