Port Blair, May 25: Coast Guard Dist. Headquarters No.–14 conducted a Community Interaction Programme for the fishing populace and locals on 24 May 18 at Chouldari, Port Blair. The opportunity was also utilized to emphasize “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao”, “Drug Abuse” and “Swachhta Hi Seva”.
During the event, the fishermen were briefed about utilization of safety to be adhered whilst operating at sea and were encouraged to carry all lifesaving equipment, boat registration papers including individual biometric ID cards for prompt identification. The Fishermen were also sensitized to operate in buddy system for better safety cover. A demonstration was also carried out on ground to air distress signals.
The issues raised by fishermen were discussed during the interaction. The representative of fisheries department Mr. Sanjeev also addressed the gathering and informed about various schemes run by government and availability of survival and commercial equipment at subsidized rate. Fishing Community were briefed to maintain continuous vigil for strangers at all landing points especially at night and necessity of carrying mobile phone for communication with toll free numbers 1554/1093.
