Port Blair, July 05: The dysfunctional traffic signals at all busy junctions are creating immense problems for the commuters of Port Blair city.
Not only this, traffic Jawans face a lot of problems to control the traffic mess at peak hours or during emergencies.
Doubtless all the traffic signals of Port Blair city let it be the signal of Lighthouse, Bhathubasti, Goalghar, Delanipur, Dairyfarm are dysfunctional from several years due to reasons, unknown.
“The conked off signals are putting extra pressure on us. Directing the traffic all day long with our hands is taking a toll on our health,” a traffic jawan told Andaman Sheekha who doesn’t want his name to be quoted.
Many people of Port Blair allege that it’s a gross wastage of manpower, human resource and taxpayers’ money.
“Manpower should be utilised in peak hours for managing traffic and in crowded areas where there is no traffic signal, but here it is opposite. At present the signal lights have been maintained as showpiece, although the administration had paid huge amount of money to install these,” an angry islander of Port Blair told Andaman Sheekha.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Mr.N. Rashid told that there is some faults with the traffic signals and the repair works are going on, within one or one and a half month the signals will get repaired.
“Anyhow, our Jawans are handling traffic quite well,” he added.
Hope this time the authorities manage to repair all signal lights so that tax-payers’ money spent for these equipments do not go waste.
