Diglipur, Mar 7: Beach cleaning drive was carried out today to create awareness amongst local population about the preservation and protection of Marine Environment as well as to further the objectives of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ at Ross & Smith Islands, Diglipur today.
The Creek Boat Association, Diglipur Tourist Boat Owners Association, Hotel & Restaurants Association, Forest Department, IP & T and PMB personnel participated in this programme.
The drive was aimed at sensitizing locals and tourists about effective waste management at grass root levels. Range Officer Aerial Bay demonstrated how house hold waste could find its way to the beaches and litter them.
The time was selected during low tide so as to have maximum area of beach available for cleaning and an attempt was made to spread the message to all to abstain from littering the beach with plastic waste and garbage, which causes damage to the sensitive ecology of the islands.
