Port Blair, Mar 07: In a serious case of fish poisoning nearly 50 staffs of three different hotels at Havelock developed symptoms of food poisoning recently.
According to report on February 28, nearly 50 staffs of three different hotels/resorts reported uneasiness after consuming a particular variety of fish, following which they were rushed to hospital and were given required treatment.
As per details four people were admitted in Havelock Hospital while rest, were released after normal treatment. One victim reached the hospital late and hence later he was referred to G B Pant Hospital.
While a large group of people strongly believe that the food poisoning was caused because of alleged chemicals being used by some fishermen for preserving fish, authorities believe that this is a clear case of fish poisoning.
When contacted a designate Food Safety Officer said that this incident happened because all the victims had somehow consumed a particular species of poisonous fish.
He said that as per reports available with him the hotel staffs had consumed a variety of Snapper fish which are often poisonous, when they consume algae from sea, which are poisonous in nature.
When Contacted Mr. Udit Prakash Rai, Commissioner of Food Safety, A & N Islands said that a notice is being served to the hotels and the supplier of the fish and if the reply is not satisfactory, fine will be imposed on them, as per law.
