Port Blair, Jan 29: A clock could be seen in the clock tower of JNRM nowadays. Nicely illuminated it tells the time in the night also. It is a welcome sight to the passersby who have been used to seeing the gaping hole in the tower.
For fifty years it gazed upon the sea, like the empty eye socket of the one-eyed Cyclops Polyphemus, the giant who was blinded by Odysseus on his long journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
Many used to remark that it has become the permanent abode of an owl who would not allow any clock to be placed there. However, during the Golden Jubilee year a clock did find its way into the empty space.
It would be visible from the sea also, presenting a nice view of the first college of the Islands. It is perhaps, the second clock tower in the islands, after the legendary ‘Ghanta Ghar’ in the War Memorial at Aberdeen. It is indeed a welcome change to the façade of JNRM.
