Port Blair, June 29: Students of Sr. Secondary School Port Mout and angry parents today blocked Andaman Trunk Road at Port Mout protesting against withdrawal of science stream from GSSS Port Mout. The protest, which started at 8.30 am continued till afternoon.
Angry students sat on road to block ATR, causing great inconvenience to ATR passengers.
Students demanded bring back science stream in GSSS Port Mout as the move of Education Department will force many students to leave Port Mout School and look for other schools.
Parents alleged that the science stream was moved to Katchal from GSSS Port Mout, without even asking people of the area.
“It seems because of poor results last year the science stream has been shifted to GSSS Katchal. If a school fails to perform well that doesn’t mean that the Education department will punish people of the entire area by removing science stream from the school.
Administration is trying to please the Tribal Council of Nancowry by punishing people of South Andaman. GSSS Port Mout’s science stream caters the need of a vast area like Tusnabad, Ferrar Gunj, Chouldari, Port Mout, Tirur and Ograbraj,” said an angry parent.
The Member of Parliament led the agitation and said that if the demands are not fulfilled students will again block the Andaman Trunk Road tomorrow morning.
However, during a meeting between the parents and Administrative officers this evening the DC made it clear that block ATR will be viewed seriously by Administration and such blockade may lead to lathi-charge. “I want to see whether the Administration has courage to resort to lathi-charge on students,” Bishnu Pada Ray told Andaman Sheekha this evening over phone.
Meanwhile, the Congress Party and BJP has cried foul over this move of Administration. Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, President, Pradesh Congress Committee along with the PRI members and party functionaries from Ferrargung Tehsil and Little Andaman called upon Commissioner cum Secretary (education) on 29.06.2012 and requested him to restore the Science stream in Class XI and XII at Senior Secondary School Port Mout and R. K. Pur in Little Andaman as the withdrawal of the same will cause hardship to the students presently pursuing education in these schools and may also effect their studies.
Here BJP today condemned the move of the Director of Education on the issue of withdrawing Science streams from Senior Secondary School Port Mout and R. K. Pur in Little Andaman. The BJP party also demanded restoration of science stream in above two schools.
