Port Blair, June 25: Mr. R Mohan, the State President along with Mr. HD Chattopadhyay, State Convener Cultural Cell and students seeking for admission in Engineering met the Chief Secretary today and appraised him that apart 35 engineering seats of NIT, the A & N Administration has been allotted 115 such seats in different colleges at mainland by the Govt of India for the student of A & N Islands. Up to previous year no cut off mark was there in the Engineering seats except of NIT seats but this year the AN Administration has made cut of marks for general and OBC categories as 48 and 45 respectively. “Many students who have cleared AIEEE examination and are in the State merit list of AIEEE, could not apply for those 115 seats,” Mr. Mohan told Chief Secretary.
Mohan has also stated that, last year the students up to 787 rank in the State merit list of AIEEE had applied for the Engineering seats but this year, as per the restriction made by the A & N Administration the students having 215 and above ranks in the merit list are unable to apply for these allotted seats.
“This being the case so many seats will be there as un-allotted and have to be returned back to the respective colleges,” Mr. Mohan said.
Ms Nikita, who advocated for the students of these islands, told the Chief Secretary that in case such allotted seats are returned back, the Government of India may cut short this allotment in the next year.
Mohan has requested to the Chief Secretary to withdraw this cut of marks, made by the A & N Administration for the welfare of Island students. The Chief Secretary reportedly assured to look into this matter.
Problems of frequent power cuts, water logging in the city and other areas, filling up of vacant posts of teachers, regularizing the services of DRMs etc were also discussed in length and the Chief Secretary has reportedly assured to use his immediate consideration in all such cases.
