Port Blair, August 17: Several low-lying areas in Port Blair were inundated following heavy rainfall today. The showers, which started at around 07.30 to 11 am, lasted well into the early hours of Thursday. Some parts of the city saw the deluge affect vehicular movement. While the intensity of heavy pour till 05:30pm caused nearly 59.7mm of rainfall.
Many roads inside residential layouts were flooded due to overflowing storm water drains. Main road near the St Mary School at Mohanpura were completely inundated in water which also interrupted traffic for a moment.
Many Vehicles got choked in water inundated areas opposite to State Bank of India, Mohanpura. The Fruit Vendors suffered huge loss as water entered inside their shops.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, one of the fruit vendors said that they have suffered a loss of more than Rs 20000/- but even after repeated complaints no authorities took concern about the earlier verbal and written complaints regarding this matter.
“Now we have to bare the loss and also have to cope up with that and work for our livelihood as there is no one left to complain,” said a Fruit Vendor.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Social Worker, Mr B Chandrachoodan said that the PBMC is least concerned as the entire drain in the Mohanpura area, which got choked because of road side encroacher.
