Port Blair, May 18: The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs is organizing open Volleyball League-cum-Knockout Tournament for the benefit of the people of these islands with effect from 17th May, 2017 to 25th May, 2017 at the Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Kanyapuram, Wimberlygunj .
Opening ceremony of this tournament was made by Smt. Tanvi Garg, Secretary (Sports) as Chief Guest in the function on 17th May, 2017 at 4.30 PM where a galaxy of sports persons and others were present. Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Tanvi Garg appreciated the efforts made by the Directorate of Sports in organizing such tournaments with the aim to strengthen the sports activities among the talented youths in future in such remote area of the islands. The Chief Guest after unveiling the Trophy, blessed the players and started the game. She also inaugurated the modern Gymnasium at the Multipurpose Indoor Stadium for the benefit of the people of these rural areas. Miss Mariyam Bibi, Ex-Adhyaksha was also present on this occasion.
Earlier Shri AK Trivedi, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs welcomed the Chief guest. He thanked the Secretary (Sports) to come to these far off place to inaugurate the tournament despite her busy engagements. He also complimented the guests and sports persons for attending the function of tournaments availing their precious times in the day.
In this regard it is mentioned that a Total 18 teams will take part in this tournament. Opening match was played between Saroj Youth Club (SYC) v/s Garacharma, Saroj Youth Club defeated Garacharma by 25-21, 28-26, 15-9, In the second match Nayapuram defeated Wimberlygunj by 25-16, 25-19 and in the Third match Polytechnic Ferrargunj defeated Kadakachang 21-25, 25-11, 15-11.
