Port Blair, Apr 13: On the occasion of Autism awareness month, a workshop on Autism was held at Vocational-cum-Rehabilitation Centre, Brookshabad on 13.04.2017 at 10.00 AM. Smt. Rashmi Singh, Secretary (SW) while addressing the gathering informed that department has recently started Vocational-cum-Rehabilitation Centre for the benefit of the Divyangjan of A & N Islands. The centre presently provides facilities like Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Speech therapy, Special Education and Other Clinical Psychological Services. The centre is in the beginning stage and is under expansion by installing modern equipments and furniture’s specifically designed for the PWDs.
Smt. Renuka Garg, Centre Incharge elaborated upon the activities and present operation of the centre. While Shri Bikash Mohanty, Occupational therapist at VRC explained about Autism and its features. Dr. Mitilesh Behari, Assistant Professor, ANIIMS spoke about the early detection of Autism and its difference from other mental illness. Shri Shreedharan the visiting professor of ANCOL and faculty of VRC gave a picturesque view of Psychological treatment of persons affected with Autism. On Interactive session, the Parents and Caregivers appreciated the role of Department for establishment of such a centre for the well being of PWDs and came up with their suggestions which was taken up for discussion and immediate action by the Department.
A large number of Divyang Children along with Parents and Caregivers, Anganwadi workers, Primary School Resource Teachers from the Education Department and Officials of the Social Welfare Department attended the programme. Shri Jitendra Agarwal, Director (SW) proposed vote of thanks.
