Hut Bay, Mar 22: Based on the request of the tribal Captain, Shri Fred Levi one day training on “Nutritious Kitchen Garden for Nutritional Security” was conducted by ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair at Harminder Bay on 20th March, 2017.
Speaking on the occasion the Chief Guest, Shri Fred Levi, Captain spoke about the various interventions undertaken by the Institute for the benefit of the Tribal farmers under the plan and guidance of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, ICAR-CIARI. He appreciated the efforts of the visiting team for the promotion of nutritious kitchen garden in the backyard with proper followup for the last three years in succession. The seeds and the implements like Kurphi, rose can, secateurs, and grow bag given to the farmers is of immense help in planting the choice crops. Shri Festus, Secretary also spoke on the occasion.
Dr. S.K. Zamir Ahmed, Principal Scientist and Mr. Amit Srivastava, STO explained in length on the benefits of the NKG with special reference to nutrition security of the family. Feedback was obtain on the adoption of the NKG, wherein the tribal farmers both men and women expressed their happiness on getting fresh vegetable from small area under backyard.
Field visit was also made to R.K. Puram (11 No.) to the field of Shri Shanti Gain, a very progressive and innovative farmer, who shared his experience on bee keeping, vegetable cultivation on the bunds, poultry, quail farming, vermicomposting and other enterprises to manage the risk and get income throughout the year. A total of 67 tribal farmers of which 38 were female participated in the training programme.
