Port Blair, Mar 10: The International Women’s Day 2017 was celebrated by the Andaman Nicobar Mahila Congress Committee at Andhra Association Hall, Port Blair on 9th March, 2017. Shri Bhagat Singh, Chairperson, A & N State Cooperative Bank, Port Blair was the Chief guest on the occasion.
Addressing the large number of ladies attended the function Shri Bhagat Singh stressed the need for women empowerment through self employment and highlighted various schemes extended by the A&N Administration and Central Government for encouraging women to be financially independent and requested to avail such facilities.
Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma, President, ANTCC also attended the meeting and expressed his views. Shri Kuldeep said that International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women and stressed the need for action to accelerate gender parity.
Smti Shanta Singh, Chairperson, A & N Mahila Congress Committee discussed upon social evils like alcoholism, dowry system and bad-effects of tobacco.
She urged the Administration to initiate action for opening Working Womens’ hostel at Rangat, Mayabunder and Diglipur for the benefit of ladies working / employed in various departments / establishments there. Smti Shanta Singh further underlined the need for registering landed properly in the joint name of husband and wife.
The gathering was also addressed by Miss. Mariyam Bibi, Smti Ratna Kannan, General Secretaries, A & N Mahla Congress, and Smti Anurada Lall, President, Clean City Organization. The speakers urged the younger generation especially the women to come forward against the social evils prevailing in the society. Smti Neela Devi, General Secretary, A & N Mahila Congress welcomed the gathering while the programme concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Smti Ramawathi, Congress leader. Smti Zubaida Begum coordinated the meeting.
