Port Blair, Mar 06: Considering growing number of cases of domestic violence and crime against women, the A & N State Social Welfare Board has started taking prominent steps prevent such crimes.
As per reports, the team of Social Welfare Board under the overall supervision of Chairperson, SWB, Dr Poonam Arora has recently travelled to almost all remote Islands of North & Middle Andaman and also to Little Andaman where the team has assigned Sakhi Saheli (an active women of the area) who will be taking care of the women of her area and will also report to the Police or directly to the DGP or SWB if she finds anyone a victim of domestic violence.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha recently, Dr Poonam Arora said that after ban on tobacco and some restrictions on selling of alcohol the ratio of Domestic Violence might have definitely come down for which the statistics will surely reflect in the coming future but even to secure the women more in the society Social Welfare Board has come up with the initiative of Sakhi Saheli and Sakhi Chawpal.
The SWB has also allocated some powers to the Sakhi Saheli. “Most of the times women don’t come forward even after being victim of Domestic Violence just because a close relative is involved in it, thus Sakhi Saheli will be really be helpful for those women,” Dr Poonam said.
Dr Poonam further added that, Sakhi Saheli will always be selected in rotation wise so that in coming times these Sakhi Sahelis can form a group, which will be later known to be Sakhi Chowpal. The Sakhi Chowpal will be responsible for creating awareness among the Women.
Sakhi Saheli will soon be selected for all the 24 Wards of Port Blair Municipal Council too for which the talks are on between the SWB and PBMC.
