Port Blair, Mar 05:The seven day residential special camp of National Service Scheme (NSS), JNRM concluded today at Attam Pahad. Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest Dr. Poonam Arora, Chairperson, A & N Social Welfare Board said camping programmes help individuals in understanding the importance of group living. She congratulated the volunteers for being part of such event. Mr. Abhijeet Agarwal ex- President of Rotary Club of Port Blair, Special Guest, addressed the volunteers and asked them to develop a sense of responsibility towards society. Dr. N. Francis Xavier, Principal JNRM, called on the students to play a greater role in community development through directly interacting with people. Mr. Shambhu Nath, social worker was also present in the programme as a village representative of the camp. Altogether 39 volunteers completed the special camp for this year.
During the camp the volunteers conducted intensive cleanliness drive in Attam Pahad Basti involving local people and youth and took out an awareness rally along with 50 NSS volunteers from DBRAIT on 1st March 2017 against the ill effects of Alcohol and drugs. Dr. N. Francis, Principal, JNRM and Mr. N.K. Udaya Kumar Vice Chairman, PBMC, flagged rally from the parking area at Bathu Basti. The Rally concluded at District Hospital, Garacharma where Dr.M.K. Mehato addressed the students about the ill effects of alcohol and drugs.
He congratulated the volunteers for taking the awareness rally. Representatives of alcoholics anonymous also addressed the rally. During the camp the volunteers also participated in the Yuva Adarsh Gram Sansad programe held at Guptapara organized by NYK. An awareness and advocacy programme on HIV- AIDS and Rare Diseases was organized in association with the Andaman and Nicobar Aids Control Society on 28.03.2017.
Padmashri Mr. Naresh Chander Lal was the Chief Guest in the inaugural session. He spoke on the importance of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Ek Bharat,Shresta Bharat Mission in which the youth have a bigger role to play. Dr. R.K. Halder, Project Director, ANACS was the Chief Guest at the concluding session of the seminar. Mr. Girish Kumar and Mr.Vivek Thakur, Assistant Director, ANACS and Resource person & from ANIIMS, Medical College also spoke in the programme in which around 100 men and women of Attam Pahad also participated along with the camping volunteers.
The Grand campfire was organized on 1st March in which Dr. Utpal Sharma Principal DBRAIT was the Chief Guest and Smti. Rubana Aziz, Councillor PBMC and Mr. Rakesh Pal Govind Ex- Pradhan, Garacharma-II and Mr. Bheeka Mahto an elderly person were the guests of honour.
In his address the Chief Guest Dr. Utpal Sharma said he was very happy to see that along with the volunteers in large numbers of villagers were also participating in such programme which will bring about a sense of the response and responsibility among the individuals and the community.
He appreciated all the volunteers and NSS JNRM unit for organizing this camp for the development of the students. At the concluding functions earlier volunteer Ashwin Nair presented welcome speech and the camp leader Ms. Sarojni Lakra presented the camp report for all the seven days.
The winners and best performers in different competitions held during the camp period were awarded prizes and medals by the Chief Guest and other Guests. R. Simeon and Manisha Chakraborty were selected as best boy and girl volunteers. The Camp Officer Dr. Kandimuthu, proposed vote of thanks. He also spoke on the need and importance of special camping programmes in NSS activities.
