Port Blair, Feb 06: Out Reach Centre supported by NABARD in association with CIARI and KVK have conducted training program on the topic “Spice cultivation” for the benefit of the farmers of Diglipur on 31st January, 2017 at Keralapuram, wherein 84 trainees participatedrepresenting different cluster of villages viz., Ramnagar, R.K. Gram, V.S. Pally, Keralapuram, Khudirampur, Radhanagar, Nabagram, Kalipur, Madhupur, Shyamnagar, Swaraj gram, Hatilevel and Kalighat of Diglipur participated.
Shri Laxman Das, a progressive farmer from Kalipur was the resource personnel, wherein he dwelt in length about the knowledge and skill needed in growing the spice crops such as black pepper, clove, and cinnamon. He also emphasized on the proper harvesting time and drying of the crop output, which will ensure better returns in the market.
Dr. S.K. Zamir Ahmed, Pr. Scientist and coordinator of the programme sensitized on the importance of spice crops which is low in volume but fetches high price. After getting the feedback on the knowledge level of the spice crops information was imparted on PoP and marketing. Dr. P.K. Singh, Pr. Scientist spoke about the integration of spice crops in the existing farming system to enhance the yield and income of the farmer.
A field visit was conducted to demonstrate plots with black pepper under arecanut , pulse crop, and survey for TLS of rice and spice at Keralapuram , V.S.Pally and R.K. Gram was done. Seeds of CIARI brinjal 1 and quality seedlings of clove, cinnamon and nutmeg were distributed to the farmers for growing in the field and backyard.
