
Port Blair, Feb 06: The Vice President, Bhartiya Janta Party, Mr Sanjay Singh on behalf of the islanders has appreciated the effort of the Lt Governor, Andaman & Nicobar Island for curbing the alcohol and Tobacco Menace in the islands to a great extend.
In a letter addressed to the Lt Governor, Mr Sanjay stated that the step taken by the Lt Governor of Banning Tobacco and restricting the selling of alcohol will definitely improve the society to a much greater extend. He further said that this step will definitely protect the upcoming generation from this menace.
He said that the decision taken by the Lt Governor is for the betterment of the society instead before taking such an important decision the Lt Governor didn’t even thought the loss administration will have to suffer.
Meanwhile mentioning about Campbell Bay, he added that during his tenure as a Pramukh at Campbell Bay he banned the alcohol for one and a half year as in 7000 population where women and children population rate is higher more than 3000 people were addicted to alcohol.
He said that the collection of ANIIDCO wine shop in the area is Rs 2 lakhs per day i.e Rs 60 lakhs per month and it might be very shocking for you to hear.
“In the year when alcohol was banned in the Great Nicobar Island the crime rate was almost zero,” Mr Sanjay said.
He finally requested the Lt Governor to keep putting efforts in making the islands a drug free islands and he also requested him to order the Social Welfare Board to conduct awareness program in the far flung islands like Campbell Bay to aware the public and protect the youths from this menace.
