Port Blair, Jan 17: ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) inaugurated hands-on training on “Fish Disease Diagnosis” under National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD) for the officials of Department of Fisheries, Andaman and Nicobar Administration at ICAR-CIARI, Garacharma during 17th -19th January, 2017. The programme was inaugurated by the chief guest of the function, Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, ICAR-CIARI. In his address, he mentioned about the critical unaddressed research gaps in the field of aquatic disease surveillance over these years and stressed the importance of disease surveillance and its relevance in aquaculture, quarantine and biosecurity of the Island ecosystem. A training manual was also released by the chief guest during the occasion. Dr. Kiruba Sankar, R, Head of Fisheries Science Division in his address briefed the recent research initiatives of Fisheries division and explained the importance of collaborative initiatives between ICAR-CIARI and Department of Fisheries to strengthen the quarantine and biosecurity of Islands. Earlier, Mr. K. Saravanan, Scientist welcomed the gathering and explained about the activities of training programme. The training programme was funded by NFDB, Hyderabad under the NSPAAD project. A total of 7 Fisheries Department officials from Diglipur, Rangat, Kadamtala and South Andaman are attending the training programme.
