18 people take shelter at relief camp in Billyground

Port Blair, June 07: Heavy rainfall since early this morning has disrupted normal life in Andaman Groups of Islands. However till now there is no report of any causality of injuries. Non Stop Rain has been reported from Port Blair, as well as various other Islands of North Middle and South Andaman region. However, the weather was clear in many parts of Nicobars District.
The rain flooded roads, markets and drains in various places disrupting normal life, especially in North and Middle Andaman region.
“Heavy rain resulted in flooding in various parts of Billyground area of Middle Andaman but there is no report of any kind of damage,” staffs of State Disaster Control Room of A & N Islands told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
At Billyground rain water flooded many houses of Harinagar and other nearby villages. Till last report poured in 18 villagers have been shifted to temporary relief camp (GSSS Billyground) by the District Administration. It is expected that till night some more people will reach the relief camp from nearby villages.
Such reports are also coming from Rangat Village, where water flooded many houses of Dhasratpur, Janak Pur, Sita Pur and Ladai Basti villages.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the rainfall will reduce tomorrow.
“There were heavy rainfall in isolated places today but tomorrow the amount of rain will reduce but still due to accumulation of clouds, few isolated places may experience heavy rainfall,” Mr. K S Kannan the incharge of Andaman IMD unit told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today. But later late in the evening the Administration issued a heavy rainfall warning for Islanders. Local Cautionary Signal No. III has also been hoisted at Port Blair Port as per IMD Kolkata.
Due to heavy rainfall, there was a flood like situation at Port Blair the Mohapura Market area. Water gushed inside many shops causing loss in business and disruption in traffic movement. According to reports, the GoAir flight could not land at Port Blair Airport this morning due to poor visibility.
