Port Blair, Dec 16: The Central Industrial Security Force team deputed at Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair today seized huge amount of cash from a Chennai bound passenger.
As per reports, G Gopal Krishnan, said to be a priest but carrying a pensioner’s card, was heading towards Chennai via Indigo Airlines with cash of Rs16,00,000.
During the X-Ray baggage checking the CISF unit saw something suspicious in his bag on which they immediately opened and checked the bag. Sources said that while checking the CISF unit found around seven and a half bundles of new Rs 2000 notes and some notes of new Rs 500 kept in two different bags.
Sources also said that the man was also carrying Rs 1,00,000 in old currencies.
The CISF unit immediately informed the matter to the Income Tax Department unit of A & N Islands, after which a team of Income Tax Department reached the spot and took the man for interrogation. Income Tax also took the cash in their custody.
According to information, G Gopal Krishnan is also not a resident of the Islands and he doesn’t even know Hindi and English.
According to reliable sources, during the interrogation the man reportedly revealed that in this entire amount, he owns only Rs 1,00,000 while rest of the amount belong to some local businessmen.
The entire episode raises many questions that how the man has collected so much of new notes of Rs. 2000 and which bank has issued the amount.
This seizure can also be a massive crackdown against black money in Andaman since demonetization, further details are awaited. It is learnt that presently Income Tax Department and A & N Police are jointly investigating into this matter.
