Dr. P. Vijayachari, Director, Regional Medical Research Centre (ICMR), Port Blair has been elected as Fellow of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, (NASI) India. He has been invited by the President of NASI to attend the 86th Annual Session of the National Academy of Sciences, India and Symposium on “Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship for Human Welfare in the Himalayan Region” during December 2-4, 2016 at Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST), Vigyan Dham, Dehradun. Dr. Vijayachari shall be conferred with the Fellowship during the NASI Fellows meeting. This Fellowship is in recognition for his several seminal contributions in the areas of Medical Microbiology and Molecular biology which included elimination of infectious diseases viz. Lymphatic filariasis, Malaria and TB in marginalized communities of A&N islands. His other major contribution included development of DNA constructs encoding leptospiral proteins as immunogens.
The Academy, located at Allahabad, was founded in the year 1930 with the objectives to provide a national forum for the publication of research work carried out by Indian scientists and to provide opportunities for exchange of views among them. This academy has several distinguished Scientist as its Fellows and members. Being the oldest science Academy of this country, NASI has carved a niche in science popularization and promotional activities.
