Port Blair, June 05: World Environment Day is celebrated worldwide every year on 05 June. To commemorate the occasion, the Components of Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC) conducted various activities to sensitise personnel on environmental issues. Our environment is our future and accordingly, the theme of ‘GREEN ECONOMY – DOES IT INCLUDE YOU?’ was aptly followed by one and all.
The different units and ships of the Command conducted numerous activities concerning ‘Environmental Awareness Programme’. Various competitions on environment issues including essay writing, poster making, painting and photography were organised.
Lectures were organised for men and families on environmental issues. Pollution, tree plantation and beach cleanup drives were also carried out by different units and ships of the Command. A special lecture emphasising on the ill effects of smoking, vehicular pollution and non-use of polythene bags was conducted by the medical team of the Command.
As part of the celebrations, a massive tree plantation drive was undertaken in Birchgunj cantonment, spearheaded by Brigadier Sanjay Thakur, Commander, 108 Mountain Brigade. INS Utkrosh and Jarawa also organised tree plantation drives. More than 1500 saplings of fruit bearing trees viz. Mango, Guava, Coconut, Cashew Nut, Jamun, Lemon, Betel Nut, Jack fruit, Pomegranate and Sweet Lime were planted.
An ‘Anti Polythene Usage’ drive coupled educating personnel on rational use of water and electricity was conducted by way of door to door canvassing. Families were motivated and urged to use recycled paper and cloth bags as well as conserve water and electricity.
The aim of the celebrations was to renew ANC’s commitment to protect and develop the environment of the Emerald Islands. The Andaman & Nicobar Command as in the past will continue its sincere efforts by undertaking various measures and activities for preservation and improvement of a cleaner and greener environment in the Islands.
