Port Blair, Oct 17: Every year 16th of October is celebrated as World Anaesthesia Day to commemorate the discovery of safe anaesthesia. It is on this date in 1846 William Thomas Green Morton demonstrated successfully the administration of Ether anaesthesia. Since then the whole course of modern surgery changed its momentum. Many modern surgical and medical achievements would not have been possible without anaesthesia.
World Anaesthesia Day was celebrated by ANIIMS and G B Pant Hospital on 15th October 2016, as 16th October was Sunday. A quiz programme was conducted by the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care for the Medical students of ANIIMS on the occasion of World Anaesthesia Day. 04 Teams namely Ross, Nicobar, Neil and Havelock were selected after preliminary written test for the final round. Team Nicobar consisting of Sruthy Francis, Vincky and Rohan Bose won the quiz competition and Team Neil came second.
Maj. Gen. R. P. Choubey, VSM (Retd), Director, ANIIMS and Dr. S.P. Burma, Medical Superintendent, G B Pant Hospital inaugurated the quiz and distributed prizes and certificates. The quiz was conducted by Dr. Anil Kumar N, Dr. Sanjay Kumar and Dr. Narayanan Rajaram of Department of Anaesthesia, ANIIMS. The programme was followed by screening of a movie on The Discovery of Anaesthesia- “The Great Moment”.
