Port Blair, Oct 5: The Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi visited the Directorate of Disaster Management, situated at Link Road here this evening. The Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Shri Anindo Majumdar, Secretary, IP, Dr. A. K. Singla and senior officers of the Administration were also present during this visit.
The Lt. Governor visited the Situation Room/Conference Hall, where the Director, Disaster Management, Shri Ashok Sharma through, a power point presentation briefed the Lt. Governor about ‘Vulnerability profile and Disaster preparedness in A&N Islands’, on how Tsunami occurs, Role of Disaster Management, Institutional Mechanism (Disaster Management in India), Functions of Emergency Operation Centers, role/activities of Incidence Response Team besides general activities to be initiated at the UT level during occurrence of any disaster.
The Lt. Governor also visited the State Control room where he was apprised about the functioning of various equipments viz. Electronic Display Board, VHF sets, Satellite phones, Hotlines and communication process. The Lt. Governor also directed the Director, Disaster Management to ensure that all the equipments set up for the purpose of Disaster Management function properly.
Earlier, the Lt. Governor was also briefed about the ‘Information, Education & Communication’ materials published by the Directorate of Disaster Management, which are being disseminated to schools, general public and Govt. Departments.
During the briefing, the Chief Secretary also suggested that all senior officers of the Administration must undergo orientation programme on Disaster Management for their knowledge. He further stated that officers touring other Islands must do a testing on Emergency Operation Centres at every place to ensure its proper functioning.
