Port Blair, Sept 22: “International Coastal Cleanup Day-2016” was conducted by No 9 Coast Guard District Headquarters (North and Middle Andaman), Diglipur at Kalipur Beach, Diglipur on 17 Sep 16 to create awareness amongst local population about the preservation and protection of Marine Environment as well as to further the objectives of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’.
300 personnel from various government organizations including Indian Coast Guard, Navy, Army, Defence Security Corps, school children from various local schools including NCC Cadets, Forest service, IB and Police participated in the event. All the volunteers’ whole heartedly participated in the collection of waste material scattered at the Kalipur Beach shoreline. The coastal Cleanup event commenced at 0730 hrs and culminated by 1000 hrs.
Mr A K Trivedi, The Assistant Commissioner of Diglipur was Chief Guest for the event. A number of other dignitaries which includes District Education Officer, Senior Officers from Police and Forest service also participated in the event.
To promote awareness about clean beaches, the school children had prepared placards with motivational slogans highlighting the importance of coastal cleanup. Considerable amount of manmade non-biodegradable garbage was collected from the beach. The garbage was segregated and disposed off in an environmental friendly manner. All the participants displayed tremendous zeal and enthusiasm during the coastal cleanship drive.

Coast Guard District Headquarters (North and Middle Andaman) expressed deep gratitude and appreciated whole hearted participation by all volunteers for ensuring safe and smooth conduct of the event. The Indian Coast Guard also extends special thanks to Mr A K Trivedi, The Assistant Commissioner of Diglipur for whole hearted cooperation by facilitating the cleanup efforts a communiqué from the PRO Coast Guard said.
