Port Blair, Sept 06: The Zonal Fisheries Office, South Andaman organized an Awareness Programme at Fish Landing Center, Junglighat on 3rd September–2016 to highlight the ongoing schemes and programmes implemented for the benefit of the Fishers by the Department. The Fishers were also informed about the mandatory requirements while venturing in the sea for fishing activity. They were also briefed about the Direct Benefit Transfer programme under various subsidy schemes of the Department.
Later hand’s on training on the usage and operation of GPS device, Fish Finder and Eco–Sounder was conducted by the representative of M/s Garmin, Mumbai for the benefit of the Fishers. The Department of Fisheries under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme implements a component “ Safety of Fishermen at Sea” wherein subsidy to the extent of 75% of the unit cost of communication equipment such as GPS, DAT, Fish Finder etc. is provided to the Fishers through the Fisher Cooperative Federation and PRIs. The Fishers were advised to take benefit of the scheme and install GPS, Fish Finder, DAT, etc. in their fishing crafts. Altogether 38 Fishers attended the programme. Similar awareness–cum–demonstration programme will be conducted shortly at Guptapara and Wandoor by the Zonal Fisheries Office, South Andaman for the benefit of the fisher community.
