Port Blair, Aug 28: Extending his best wishes to Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, who assumed charge as the 12th Lt. Governor of these islands recently, the former Up-Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad, Mr Sudhir Biswas has invited his attention to the problems being faced by the remote residents of Little Andaman, Car Nicobar and Campbell Bay and requested his intervention for improvement in boat services to the islands.
“The southern group of islands like Little Andaman, Car-Nicobar and Campbell bay are one of the most isolated islands of this territory and majority of the population from these areas travel by ship or helicopter for various purposes. However, poor shipping connectivity has become a major concern hindering development in these remote islands.”
Vessels like MV Sentinel, MV Chowra have been serving these remote islands for the past three decades. However, the poor state of these vessels cause many hardships to the commuters particularly during rainy seasons. It has now become essential to induct newer and larger vessels for the remote islands. Besides, the Administration should also consider constructing a Mini Airport at Little Andaman, the proposal for which is still pending, said Mr Biswas urging the Lt. Governor to take necessary steps to mitigate the problems of the remote population.
