Port Blair, Aug 12: As part of International Youth Day celebrations, JNRM, in association with Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur organized a one day state level seminar on the theme “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Production and Consumption”. The aim was to encourage participation of youth in achieving sustainable development goals and making positive contribution to the society. The Chief Guest on the occasion Shri Ingit Pratap Singh, IPS, Director Sports & Youth Affairs, A & N Administration highlighted that sustainable development is a collective responsibility and we should take care to use planetary resources reasonably so that they are left for the future generations also. The Guest of Honour Dr. TVRS Sharma, Principal Scientist (Emeritus), CIARI mentioned that our agricultural production should be technology driven and we should work towards better production and storage of pulses which is always in short-supply. In the valedictory function Sri Ghanshyam Pandey, Director Agriculture, A & N Islands emphasized that sustainable agriculture in these Islands can be achieved by using organic fertilizers and bio-pesticides. Earlier welcoming the gathering Dr. N. Francis Xavier, Principal JNRM highlighted that famines were quite frequent in pre-Independence times, but the situation started improving after Independence as India became self-sufficient in food grain production due to the Green Revolution. He mentioned that we must work towards sustainable practices for resource extraction and consumption. The day-long seminar was divided into two technical sessions and resource persons and students from JNRM, ANCOL and TGCE participated and presented their views. The convener and co-convener of the seminar were Dr. Kandimuthu and Dr S.K. Jha Assistant Professor, JNRM. The programme was coordinated by Dr N Lakshmi, Assistant Professor, JNRM .
