Port Blair, July 29: Solar street lights a non polluting source of electricity has been installed and made operational at Katchal as a part of green India initiative. 15 Nos. solar street lights out of the total 200 Nos. purchased for Nicobar group of Islands have been installed and made operational at Katchal Island. Rest of the solar street are are under installation at other Islands. Solar street lights are raised light sources, powered by Photo Voltaic panels, which charge a rechargeable battery that powers a lamp during the night. The installation of such lights essentially requires shadow free area and are independent of utility grid.
