Port Blair, July 27: In an inspiring response to an appeal made to general public for voluntarily surrendering air-rifles which are primarily used for hunting of wild birds in an around Port Blair area. The PRIs were requested to motivate and mobilized people to restrain from hunting of birds.
Shri Sanjay Meshack, Councilor Ward No.23 has mobilized Shri Chaman Lall, R/o Prothrapur and surrendered his air-rifle which was used for hunting of birds for more than a decade with Shri Suresh Vengappan, Range Officer(Protection).
This proactive work to council and motivate people to discontinue the passion for hunting of wild birds by public representative will go long way in conservation of highly endangered and endemic birds of this emerald Islands. As bird watching is considered to be emerging economic activity, conservation of birds will ensure sustainability in eco-tourism sector.
The PRI members and general public are requested to come forward to join hands with the department in protection and conservation of rare and unique bio-diversity of these Islands by discouraging the practice of using air rifles/gun for hunting wild birds.
