Port Blair, July 21: A major fire broke out at the record room of the State Transport office, Port Blair here this afternoon, destroying many record files kept inside the record room. No casualty has been reported.
The fire was first noticed by the staff members of the office. Around seven fire tenders and water bousers were pressed into service to control the fire, Chief Fire Officer, Mr. B Saigal said today.
As per sources, the fire triggered because of heavy load in the switch board inside the record room. Tremendous effort was seen by the Fire Brigade Jawans to control the fire.
It took around two hours for the fire personnel to control the fire.
The Superintendent of Police, Fire Brigade, Mr Aatmaram Despande also reached the spot to control the situation.
Sources from Fire Services said that it was very difficult to control the fire because the office was very packed with records and other machines. However, to support the Fire Brigade the police as well as the Naval Fire Tender also reached the spot.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, the Chief Fire Officer, Fire Brigade, Mr B Saigal said that due to the tremendous effort of the Fire Personnel we have saved near 95% of the records from burning.
