Port Blair, July 17: The Founder, Sudhangshubala Foundation Trust, Mr Bhabesh Majumder has appreciated the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Mr Anindo Majumdar for his valued intent of propagating organic farming in A&N Islands. The Chief Secretary’s instruction to the Agriculture Department to encourage organic farming on a sustainable basis speaks a volume about his concern for public health, said the SBFT Founder in a communication. The excessive use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides not only cause irreparable harm to the consumers’ health, the soil also loses its fertility over a period of time, and as such the farmers are also the losers in the long run, opined Mr Majumder.
The Agriculture Department officials would like to pay attention to the production of vermicompost which is an important ingredient of organic farming. The vermin compost pits constructed all over the islands with the help of government subsidy are lying in damaged condition. The direction issued by the Chief Secretary would in all likelihood spur the officials to monitor and ensure proper maintenance of these pits. He is dot on the mark when he said that the agriculture plays an important role in improving the socio-economic condition of the farming community, said Mr Bhabesh adding that such a move would also help the unemployed youth engage in farming activity instead of running after scarce government jobs. Mr Anindo Majumder is a man of vision and his presence in these islands will be very much beneficial to the development of the islands, said Mr Bhabesh.
