Port Blair, July 11: As part of the month long celebration of 67th Van Mahotsava 2016, a mass tree planting drive was organized in the premises of Tagore Govt. College of Education on Monday with the active participation of the Principal, Staff and students of the Institute. Mr Jaidev Singh, Principal, TGCE was the chief guest on the occasion. Altogether 100 saplings of various species namely Amaltas, Peltophorum, Gulmohar, Bauhinia, Jack Fruit, Guava, Cassia Glauca, Neem, Khattaphal and Jamun were planted.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Jaidev Singh emphasized on planting more & more trees not only to compensate the deforestation but also due to the invaluable contribution i.e. oxygen, food, timber, shade etc. by the trees other than their role in protection of planet earth. He urged students to take care of the planted saplings till they are well established and carry out regular weeding.
Mr S.K. Roy, Range Officer, Forest Extension and Publicity Division informed the students about the important role of plants in prevention of Global Warming by supplying oxygen and locking the carbon in the form of wood. He also urged the students to plant more & more trees and also to protect them for posterity.
